Making Bat Excluders!
Jul 1, 2025
Something a bit different yesterday, I was out on site making bat excluders!
This kind of work is right up my street, it’s part ecology, part engineering, and 100% bespoke. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to excluding bats from crevices. Every roost access point is unique, which is why I always make my own rather than buying off-the-shelf.
We use these clever little devices to make sure that any cracks and crevices are bat-free before works begin, it’s a vital step in protecting roosting bats while allowing development to proceed legally and responsibly.
The key? Robust design, no sticky surfaces, and just enough room for the bats to safely exit without being able to get back in. Mine always seem to end up looking a bit like aardvarks or elephants… and honestly, that just adds to the joy.
This kind of hands-on problem-solving always puts a smile on my face.
Just about to sign off before heading away for a long weekend, but wanted to share this little moment before I go.
