Project Update from Beautiful Wells
Mar 17, 2026
Working within the Ecology Group gives us the opportunity to collaborate with some exceptional teams across the wider organisation, one of those being the fantastic Johns Associates Ltd. Their longstanding work with Wells Cathedral continues this year, with a significant project that got underway at the beginning of March.
The historic Vicars’ Close, renowned as one of the oldest continually inhabited residential streets in Europe, is currently undergoing essential remedial roofing works. These repairs are vital to protect the historic fabric of the buildings and ensure the wellbeing of their occupants, many of whom are still members of the Wells Cathedral Choir, just as the houses were intended to host when first constructed. The Close is a remarkable blend of medieval heritage and architectural evolution, full of character and beautiful details.
Burton Reid Associates were brought in during the first week of works this year to support the project team. Our role included supervising roof strip operations, attending site meetings to discuss potential licence modifications to ensure seamless progress, and assisting with any queries raised on site.
It was an absolute delight to contribute to such an incredible project and to help safeguard a piece of living history.
